Headline is the most important part of your advertising message, no matter whether it is postcard marketing, direct response mail, ads on the newspaper, yellow pages ad, or anything else. Headline is the ad for your ad. If your headline fail to grab your customers’, the rest of the message does not matter.

I was listening an interview with a famous copywriter online, it gives me an idea that I haven’t thought of before. Take a look at your favorite magazines, or the magazines that your customers like to read, and check out the headlines on the cover of the magazines. Those headlines are written by high paid writers who gets paid for results. Those headlines have to be effective enough to get people to purchase the magazines.

For small business owners who cannot afford expensive copy writers, we can model the headlines that are on the magazine covers. For instance, if you are selling jewelry, cosmetics, or woman clothing, take a look at the cover of Cosmopolitan, or any woman magazines. These magazines will give you ideas what triggers your customers to buy, and how to write to get your customers read your message.

Take a look at the ads in the magazines as well. Those companies who advertise in the magazines also target the same market as yours. Companies spent a lot of money to advertise on national magazines and they have spent a lot of money of market research before designing the ad. You can borrow their ideas and use that on your marketing and advertising materials as well.

So look around, spend some time on reading magazines that your customers love.  You can find out a lot about your customers by reading magazines, and get a lot of ideas on how to write headline or sales material from them.
