Many people think direct mail equals to junk mail; therefore, many small business hesitate to use this strategy. This is a more of a myth than anything. The list you are sending to is the most important part of your direct mail campaign. If you mail to a list of people who can benefit from your products or services, you are providing a great service to your target market.
If you open your mailbox, probably you get a lot of coupons of your neighborhood supermarkets or stores. Many people might see it as “junk mail,” but most people would check out the coupons, cut out those that they will probably use before they throw the rest in the trash or recycle bin. If your direct mail campaign targets the people that they can benefit from your products or services, you are not sending junk mail to your audience.
I have a real estate license and it is going to expire soon. Many real estate schools started to send me mail to remind me my license is going to expire and they offer classes at low costs, and i can just take the exams online. They make it very easy for me. There is a company that sent me the entire course in print, which is a pretty think book. I just need to read it, then go online to their website to take the exam.
This is an example of a direct mail campaign that has a clear target market and they offer a product that their target market will find useful. I know that many mortgage agents get a list of home owners whose adjustable rate mortgage going to end in 6 months of less, they target those people (usually within a certain area, or certain loan amount, or whatever they specialize in) and offer their service to help them refinance their mortgages. The mortgage officers can probably lower their monthly mortgage payment.
The list is the most important part of the direct mail campaign. If you send postcards or any type of mail to the group of people that they are not interested in your products, you are wasting your. If you target the people that can use your products or services, you will find a customers and probably they will tell their friends or coworkers about your products as well.
